Natural Environment vs. outpatient therapy research

  • Posted by Michelle Ragan on Monday, 2008-02-11 at 13:45:41

Does anyone have a body of research that has specific information about service and support occuring in the home vs in an outpatient therapy setting? I've collected a number of articles from researchtopractice.info, as well as information from the NECTAC website and McWilliam and Dunst. Nothing so far, that points specificially to learning in an oupatient setting.

If you use the link to "annotated bibliography" on the Part C settings home page and then type in the search field "Therapy". There are 22 articles the appear. The articles may support the inverse of what your are looking for, why learning doesn't happen well for young children in a therapy rooms, inpatient or outpatient clinic settings as that has been the research focus for the past decade and of course the intent of the Part C legislation with natural environments and of course inclusion philosophy. The National Associations for Physical Therapist, OT's, and ASHA have their professional statements on line which support services and children's learning in the home and community settings through natural learning activities. The purpose of Part C is to enhance the child's development and to help the family help their child.

The only reserach articles you might find would have to do with treatment (short term) of a specific condition. You might try a search of a specific condition by name + treatment options + young children and see if that will lead you to any reserach to support a clinic setting.

That is exactly what I want! I work in Early Intervention and we've been asked by a local outpatient facility to present information on what we do. We want to include a reference list. Thank you!
