RTI in Middle Schools

  • Posted by Sara Prewett on Monday, 2008-04-28 at 14:34:32

The National Center on Response to Intervention (www.rti4success.org) is in the process of examining the use of Response to Intervention (RTI) at the middle school level to enable us to disseminate information to State Education Agencies (SEAs), school settings, teacher training institutions, research agencies, national organizations, and other stakeholders regarding implementation of RTI models. We are interested in knowing how middle schools across the nation have implemented an RTI model. If your middle school is implementing such a model, or if you know of a middle school that is implementing an RTI model, please send us your contact information by May 30, 2008, so we can initiate conversations with staff. You may contact Sara Prewett, saralp@ku.edu (785) 864-7053, or Allison Layland, alayland@ku.edu, (785) 864-7072.

If you are interested in learning more about RTI and the National Center on Response to Intervention, tune into the “What is Response to Intervention (RTI)” webinar by Daryl Mellard, Ph.D., on May 14, 2008, 1:00-2:00 EST.

One of my chief concerns, as someone who does a good deal of PD in school districts on this issue, is the lack of curriculum support. Far to often, the curriculum is narrowly written to "meet the standards" - what about the kids that need more (gifted or accelerated) or need different (differentialed or remedial)? Far too often, teachers are left reinventing the wheel daily, rather than having exemplary lessons with those supports built into the lesson.

This was posted in the LRE Part B community but was a response to this posting on RTI in middel schools - it was posted by Robert Wall who is a member of TAcommunities
