Transforming Urban Education: Implications for State Policymakers

As a steering group of the larger coalition of superintendents and teacher union presidents from eight of the largest urban school districts in Ohio, the Ohio 8 Leadership Council wrestled with the question, How can urban public education in Ohio transform to become a high-demand, high-performing system in 2020? This brief discusses three of the Councils responses to the four possible scenarios: 1) development of a comprehensive approach to urban schooling, 2) prioritization of service learning for urban schools, and 3) the preparation of urban students to face the challenges of the 21st century. The brief highlights existing examples of promising programs, approaches and initiatives.
